Recipe For Laundry Soap

After collecting all of my ingredients and gathering equiptment, I was on my way to my first batch of Laundry Soap!  Yay!  Yes, this was super fun & exciting for me!  I don't know which thing I loved most about this process; saving money, shredding the bar soap, mixing everything up in the blender or the completed product!  Ok, enough about me:)

Here is everything that you'll need to make your own homemade laundry soap!

You Will Need:

  • Grater (Cheese Grater)
  • A Blender
  • Large Bowl
  • Medium Bowl
  • Large Spoon
  • 1 Cup Measure
  • Wax Paper
  • Plastic or Glass See-Thru Container with lid
  • Measuring Scoop or Spoon

Ingredients:

  • 3-Cups 20 Mule Team Borax
  • 3-Cups Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
  • 1/2-1-Cup Oxygen Cleaner (I used 'Sun' Brand, this is an optional stain remover)
  • 3-Bars Soap (I prefer Fels-Naptha or Kirk's Castile brands. Note: if you use the Fels-Naptha brand your laundry soap will have a yellow color to it. If you use only the Kirk's Castile it will be solid white. I actually mixed them, using 2 bars of Fels-Naptha and 1 bar of Kirk's Castile bar soap)
***Optional Fragrance - 7-10 Drops of Lavendar 100% Essential Oil (Lemon and Lavendar is a great mix also!) Just add the drops to your final mix in the Blender:)

Directions:

1. Gather all ingredients and equiptment
(You can put your bar soap in the freezer about 15-20  minutes ahead to have a firmer bar to grate.)

2. Shred Bars of Soap on wax paper and shake into Medium bowl. Set aside.

Mix Shreds with Powdered

3. In the Large bowl, measure all powdered ingredients, stir shredded bar soaps in. Mix well.

Put Mixture in Blender

  4. Pour Soap Mixture into blender about a cup at a time (Dumping    finished mixture into your See-Thru Container as you finish each  cup).  This helps prevent Blender overload.

Before Blending

If you use an Oster Blender like mine,   choose the settings; "High" and "Grate" on your blender. Just a few seconds at a time, until you get the shreds into a finer powder.

 5. Your finished Laundry Soap should look about like the picture to the left.

Lavendar 100% Essential Oil

Optional - If you would like a special scent like the Lavendar I added to mine, use only 100% Essential Oils.  You can add the drops to the final mixture in your blender a drop at a time or add them all to the final mixture in your Laundry Container. Mix well.

That's It!  This will make approx. 150 Loads of laundry - 1 TBSP each (or about 75 Loads of Heavy Duty Laundry  - 2 TBSP each)

*You will be able to make at least one more batch  of this recipe with the powdered soaps you will have leftover. Just buy 3 more bars of soap to make the next batch!

I purchased most of my ingredients from Amazon.com, but you can find these at your local grocer or Wal-Mart.

My next post will be all about making labels for our Laundry Soap!  Until then, have fun and please let me know how your soap turns out! ~~Lucie

Simple Ways to Save Money

If you are like me, you are looking for ways to save money! As a "stay at home" mom -in between jobs - living on only one income its very important for me to try new ways to save money.

Since being back at home I have realized how much we spend on Laundry soap!  With two children still at home (one being a very active 13-year old boy!) we have LOTS of laundry!!

I started looking on Pinterest just for fun but soon discovered that there is alot of great information on there! I have been toying with the idea of making my own soap for several months, collecting everything I need (The Blender, The Molds for bar soaps, Double Boiler, the Essential Oils, Borax, Washing Soda, Oxygen Cleaner, and the Fels Naptha & Castile Bar Soaps.)

Well, Finally, Last Night I made my first batch of Laundry Soap (I'm calling it "Lucie's Lavendar Laundry Soap").  My Next post will have lots of pictures and step-by-step directions so that you can make your own!  It was fun and soo easy!!
